Speaking to developers in their language
Role: Creative Director
Solace creates category-leading products that simplify the complexities of data transfer. For years Solace successfully marketed to the C-suite, but to stay competitive, it became clear that the real decision-makers were the developers on the ground level. To reach this notoriously skeptical, insular and marketing-adverse group, we needed to shift their entire approach to marketing.
Diving deep into developer culture, we found a shared affinity for inside jokes, industry sarcasm and off-kilter humor that was as clever as it was outlandish. There was a vibe of “If you don’t get it, it wasn’t meant for you.” So we crafted a campaign that would resonate with the developer community and, quite possibly, no one else.
We started with the insight that failure is not an option for developers. With that in mind, we asked them “What Could Go Wrong?” when everything else goes right by choosing Solace’s products.
Shareable Films
Developers love inside jokes, industry sarcasm and off-kilter humor, so we created a pair of shareable films that play on that, showing the outlandish outcomes that may follow success after a developer recommends Solace. We chose to work with director Robert Boocheck to help us capture the most hilarious results.
Educational Landing Page
The films drove users to a landing page where they could choose to learn more about the product or… go down a seemingly endless and progressively absurd Wikipedia rabbit hole (but with porpoises instead of rabbits).
Banners with Attitude
A series of humorous banner ads delivered messaging in a developer-friendly tone at various points along the campaign journey, daring them to click to learn more.
Snackable IRL Messages
Developers love snacks. So we snuck our messaging into the real world at developer conferences like Google Next, giving away mysterious and amusing fortune cookies that pointed developers to Solace.
